Why Is Numeracy Important in Early Childhood?
Numeracy is more than counting — it’s the ability to understand numbers, patterns, measurements, and spatial relationships. These skills help children make sense of the world, solve problems, and build confidence in their ability to learn.
The Science Behind It
Early maths skills are strong predictors of later academic success — even more than early reading in some studies. Between ages 3 and 6, the brain is especially responsive to experiences that involve sorting, comparing, and recognising quantities, which strengthen logical and numerical thinking.
How Can We Support
Numeracy & Counting?
We can support numeracy through everyday play: counting steps, sharing snacks, comparing sizes, or spotting numbers in the environment. Hands-on, visual, and movement-based activities are particularly powerful in building early maths confidence.
