Why Are Fine Motor Skills Important?
Fine motor skills involve the coordination of small muscles — especially in the hands and fingers — that are essential for everyday tasks like writing, buttoning, using scissors, or tying shoelaces. Strong fine motor development supports independence and prepares children for school-based tasks.

The Science Behind It
Fine motor control is closely tied to brain development, particularly in the motor cortex and cerebellum. From as early as infancy, neural pathways form through repetition and practice. Research suggests that early fine motor ability is linked to later academic achievement in literacy and maths — showing just how foundational it is.

How Can We Support

Fine Motor Skills?

We can support fine motor development by offering hands-on activities that encourage pinching, grasping, squeezing, cutting, drawing, and manipulating small objects. Play is the most natural (and fun!) way to build these skills — no pressure, just practice.
